Fluoride Applications

Fluoride Applications

Gentle Implant, Cosmetic & Restorative Dentistry

Fluoride is a natural substance that strengthens tooth enamel, making the teeth more resistant to harmful oral bacteria and acids. When applied directly to the teeth in safe doses, fluoride can go a long way towards preventing cavities and other forms of tooth decay. People of all ages receive supplemental fluoride applications, and our dental experts will recommend the treatment for any patient who is at a high risk of experiencing tooth decay.

Fluoride applications are particularly beneficial for patients who suffer from any of the following conditions:

  • Dry mouth conditions
  • Limited saliva flow
  • Periodontitis or gum disease
  • Frequent cavities
  • Sensitive or exposed root surfaces

Fluoride Applications Are Also Appropriate For Those Who:

  • Have dental crowns, bridges or braces
  • Consume large amounts of sugar
  • Have limited exposure to fluoride
  • Have a prior history of tooth decay
  • Demonstrate poor oral hygiene habits

At Krause Dental, we conduct our fluoride applications by applying fluoride varnish directly to a patient’s teeth. Fluoride varnish is highly concentrated, and it contains much greater levels of fluoride than what is found in any standard toothpaste. The substance can be painted onto a person’s teeth in a process that usually only takes a couple of minutes. After having fluoride varnish applied, a patient will want to avoid eating or drinking anything for at least an hour, and they should wait at least four to six hours before brushing their teeth. This will allow their teeth to fully absorb the fluoride so that they can get the maximum benefit from the treatment.

It is important to remember that while supplemental fluoride applications can be very helpful in preventing cavities and tooth decay, this treatment is not designed to serve as a replacement for proper oral hygiene habits. Any patient who has received a fluoride application should continue to brush at least twice per day, floss daily and receive regularly scheduled dental checkups at least twice per year.
