Also referred to as endodontic therapy, root canal treatment is designed to save and repair a badly damaged or infected tooth. If an infected tooth is left alone for a long period of time, bone loss can occur. It is very important to catch this problem before it deteriorates too far.
A root canal procedure is needed when the pulp of a tooth becomes damaged by infection, decay or injury. Pulp is found on the inside of a tooth, and it extends from the outer surface, all the way to the root of the tooth in the jawbone. A tooth fracture or a deep cavity can allow harmful bacteria to access the pulp can cause serious harm. When this occurs, the pulp can start to die, essentially causing the tooth to rot from the inside. Symptoms can include the swelling of the gums, severe toothache and temperature sensitivities.
When conducting a root canal treatment, we clean out the tooth entirely and replace its insides with a medicated filling that will keep it safe and protected from further damage.
Using advanced tools, we will access the inside of the tooth through its top and remove any decay and infected pulp. From there, we will flush out the root canals, cleaning out the tooth down to its root. Once we are sure that the entire tooth is completely free of any infectious material, it will be filled with a rubber-like material called gutta-percha to give it necessary structure and support. To finish, a dental crown will be used to cap the tooth and prevent any fractures from occurring later. This will leave your treated tooth with a natural appearance. With proper maintenance and care, your restored tooth should last a lifetime.
